Casting Crowns Christmas Celebration
We were able to be a part of The Casting Crowns Christmas Celebration last night, featuring Casting Crowns, Natalie Grant, Avalon, Michael English, pureNRG and Denver & The Mile High Orchestra. The diverse line-up had many moving and entertaining moments and we were often left longing for more of each artist.
The recurring theme of the night was glorifying God and how changing tunes or telling the story behind a Christmas song would bring to life the often-powerful lyrics that we may sing by rote and not consider as we sing. Casting Crowns deftly wove in two non-Christmas songs including East to West after an altar call.
The evening began with a ballet performer quietly setting up a Nativity, followed by an ensemble performance.
Michael English's voice has returned and he contributed powerful performances accompanied by awkward stage presence. Avalon and Denver nearly stole the show with entertaining sets (Denver was a revelation since most were not familiar with the group). Natalie Grant also showcased powerhouse vocals and Casting Crowns anchored the entire evening with strong and entertaining appearances. pureNRG seemed to be the odd-man out since they primarily danced to canned music, but the kids loved them.
We expected it to end with a rousing ensemble number, but it ended respectfully with a quiet ensemble performance.

'Twas Meant To Be
Christianity Today has a nice interview with Sixpence None The Richer on reuniting and producing new music.
Matt has a nice quote and insight on Christian music:
Matt has a nice quote and insight on Christian music:
I recently read a book called Rapture Ready. The author breaks down Christian music into three categories. One is a ministry focus, two is more of an entertainment focus, and three he calls "a transformational artist"—artists in the Christian marketplace who are doing really good music that can reach the culture at large. I think we are comfortable with doing that [from within the CCM industry], as opposed to grumbling about it and wishing we were on the other side. We have had a lot of doors open to us over the years, so I hope it reaches people on both sides of the fence.

My dad has been a pastor my whole life. I grew up in a home where faith was extremely important. I feel like my music is a reflection of God’s impact in my life. I’m definitely unashamed to be a Christian and I’m blessed that he has given me so much success.

Focus on the Family ceases publication of teen magazines
Focus on the Family ceases publication of teen magazines Brio, Brio and Beyond, and Breakaway. According to the Gospel Soundcheck blog, the last issues will be February 09.
Apparently, the Focus on the Family Board approved a massive budget cut and the magazines were among the casualties. Focus is hoping that another ministry will pick up the magazines and keep them alive, either in print or online.

Stephen Baldwin Takes Dare & Gets Tat
Sometimes you have to take unusual steps to get exposure for your product and to get additional work. Stephen Baldwin recently showed off an "HM" tattoo on his upper bicep to Miley Cyrus at a book signing for his new book. The story is that Miley dared him to get the tat, in exchange for a cameo on her hit show Hannah Montana.
While we can't confirm that he'll be appearing on an upcoming episode, Cyrus' appearance should lead to additional book sales.

Fireproof Proves to be a $30 Million Winner
Fireproof remains in the Top 20 at the Box Office (currently #13) and has passed $30 million in ticket sales. Not too shabby for a movie with an approximate budget of $500K.
Hopefully the box office receipts are indicative of this film's impact on our culture and that positive influence will be magnified over time. It's also great to see a movie that effectively uses Christian music so well embraced.

Right Now (We Need One Another)
Grammy®-winning, multi-platinum-selling BeBe & CeCe Winans along with country superstars Vince Gill and Wynonna Judd came together and recorded "Right Now (We Need One Another)" a song they debuted today live in a post-election episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show.
The song is exclusively available on iTunes. The single will also be included on the untitled, anticipated, album by BeBe & CeCe which is sure to be a popular release in 2009.
A better name might have been "Right Now (We Need God), thanks to you Oprah" - in part because of the New Ager's support of Obama.

Smallwood uninvited from White House
Who knew that Richard Smallwood was so far left? The legendary black gospel performer was smartly uninvited from the White House's celebration of Gospel Music Heritage Month after performing at a retirement party for the controversial radical Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
Smallwood has been invited to perform at the White House before, but he turned the invitation down, citing "atrocities of the Administration on the lives of African Americans, especially the middle and lower class." And he tells Gospelcity.com that he wouldn't accept an invitation even if it was offered.

SixStepsRecords Defies Gravity
While SixSteps forges ahead with consistency in staff, artists, and record sales, the question is how has the label stayed successful? Its small size is important, but so are the label's focus and unconventional management structure.

A major upcoming change is the planting of a church in Atlanta involving Louie Giglio, Tomlin, and Redman.
The latter two have already moved there, though the timeline for development is uncertain, as is the impact on the label. "I see songs coming out of the church," says Tomlin of the new plant. "I see Chris Tomlin still making records, but I also see Passion Church CDs , and that kind of thing. The reason I'm excited about that is we've never been in the same place: me and Redman and Louie."

New Film, the Imposter, to feature Kevin Max
Kevin Max (DC Talk) is headlining the faith-based film The Imposter. The movie also stars two other notable musicians, Kerry Livgren (Kansas, AD) and Jeff Deyo (Sonicflood).
Max's character, the lead singer of chart-topping Christian band whose lifestyle and subsequent breakdown eventually leads to redemption and self-discovery.
As much as I love DC Talk and Kevin's music, I can't help, but wonder how much of this is reflective of Kevin's own life. Besides sharing the title with one of Max's solo CDs, the writer/director said he thought of Kevin as he crafted the film.

Grey's Anatomy has an interesting history of using Christian artists in their show. While the show is questionable at best for believers, it's nice to see this music being exposed to the masses. Oh Woman, Where Art Thou?
GMC has a fantastic article on the lack of a consistent female presence on the Christian charts.
“It’s a struggle for females right now for sure,” Natalie Grant shares. “We’re in a cycle, and it’s been a long one... Today, so many radio stations are programmed by research, and the research often says listeners don’t want to hear from female artists.”
So who exactly is the target Christian radio listener? It’s typically females ages 35–44, the soccer moms affectionately known as 'Becky.'
"Radio programmers are targeting ‘Becky’ because they believe they will get most of the family listening if she is. She’s really the most important one to have on board," Chris Hauser says. “The challenge of the current research model is seeing that very few female voices end up translating well with ‘Becky.’ The big joke is that if the artist’s name is ‘Becky,’ then ‘Becky’ doesn’t want to hear anyone named ‘Becky.’

DecembeRadio "Satisfied" Prelease Concert at Hard Rock Cafe
We had the opportunity to attend the DecembeRadio "Satisfied" Pre-lease Concert at Hard Rock Cafe(!) in Atlanta. Echoing Angels opened with a surprisingly rocking set then turned it over to DecembeRadio.
The boys from Virginia did a great job and brought the house down. Perhaps in recognition of their atypical venue, the music was scalding with blazing guitars and an effective front-man.
Their freshman CD was one of the best rock CDs released in the last two years and this CD continues a level of excellence, but I must admit they're even better live.

Are you an average Christian radio listener?
Many Christian radio stations base their music programming on a prototypical listener often labeled "Becky." She is a woman in her 30s to 40s, married with kids. Which explains why Christian radio is primarily adult contemporary, pop, or light rock.
A great summary of a recent survey by Dunham+Company Marketing here.
GMC has a trend report which notes how research impacts who and what is played:
"the research often says listeners don’t want to hear from female artists" notes popular singer Natalie Grant.

Newsboys Front Row Live Taping
We had the opportunity to attend the Newsboys taping of Front Row Live for Gospel Music Channel.
It was a shockingly small crowd of around 100 and the intimate setting contributed to our great experience. It was easily one of the better concerts we've attended. The performance was fantastic and the downtime between songs were quite entertaining. It was nice seeing the playful side of the group as they joked with the crew, each other and the audience. They also ended the night with one of the most compelling altar calls that I've ever heard. A similar, but less compelling one can be viewed here.

The performance was fantastic and the downtime between songs were quite entertaining. It was nice seeing the playful side of the group as they joked with the crew, each other and the audience. They also ended the night with one of the most compelling altar calls that I've ever heard. A similar, but less compelling one can be viewed here.

Christian artists on Scrubs
Christian artists have appeared in Scrubs, primarily cross-over with the notable exception of Kutless.
Jon McLaughlin - "Human" in episode "My Conventional Wisdom" (Season 6)
Kutless - "All Of The Words" in episode "My Bright Idea"
Lifehouse - "First Time" in "My Point of No Return" (Season 6), "All in All" in "My Coffee" (Season 6)
Mat Kearney - "Where We Gonna Go From Here" in "My Own Worst Enemy" (Season 7)
The Fray - "How to Save a Life" in "My Night to Remember" (Season 6) and "She Is" in "My Night to Remember" (Season 6)
Kutless' appearance is particularly startling because it is a praise song and you hear the majority of it in a pivotal and climatic scene:
Plus
Dashboard Confessional - "Stolen" in "My Cold Shower" (Season 6)
Michael McDonald - "Our Love" in "My Scrubs" (Season 6)

Melissa Ethridge - Christian artist?
In Rolling Stone magazine Melissa Etheridge revealed:
Keaggy heard of Etheridge's comments and responded:
On a related note, even Rolling Stone recognized Keaggy's prowess in an article on the top 25 underrated guitarists.
"In high school I had dreams of maybe having a career in Christian music." (Her first real gig was opening for Phil Keaggy in her hometown, and after the show she asked him what he thought of her set. "He basically said, 'I don't think there's a place for people like you in Christian music.' But he said it very nicely. I thought, 'Ok. They don't want me, I don't want them."
Keaggy heard of Etheridge's comments and responded:
"I believe that Melissa Etheridge is a gifted and dedicated artist who has proven herself to be creative and brave especially in light of her victory over cancer...
Well, first off, I hardly remember saying such a thing to her, at least in such a negative tone, as may be perceived. As I recall, in my own journey around that time, I had my own issues with the Christian Music Business as I saw it...
Melissa and I have never met since that day and I regret if she feels offended by what she thinks I said and meant.
As I look again at the words she claims I said, I wonder if, in reality, I was quite impressed with her music and delivery and thought perhaps CCM and the business of Christian music of that day would ever "get her"-- and be able to support her. Finally, I wish her all the best and applaud her fortitude throughout all the adversities of life."
On a related note, even Rolling Stone recognized Keaggy's prowess in an article on the top 25 underrated guitarists.

Jason Castro Tossed from American Idol
Tuesday's performance round on American Idol focused on the songs of Rock and Roll
Hall of Famers and the dreadlocked, guitar-wielding 20-year-old blanked
on the lyrics of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" after delivering Bob
Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff." Prior to being booted, Castro was joined
onstage by Mercado as the other contestant with the lowest vote count.
Castro, the believer from Texas, was grinning ear to ear as he exited re-hashing "Sheriff."

Hawk Nelson is My Friend
Hawk Nelson is back and they've got the t-shirt to prove it.
Everybody needs a friend as confirmed by the modern phenomenon of social networking websites like MySpace and Facebook and as we gather to talk around the water cooler or chatter in the schoolyard. You'll see these themes played out in the new HN album.
"The album title is also what's printed across the front of our most popular tee shirt," according to Hawk Nelson bass player Daniel Biro. "And there's a little joke in there, because so many people still think 'Hawk Nelson' is some guy's name."
Interesting note: they've paired with '80s pop star-turned-hit songsmith Richard Marx on the mature "One Little Miracle."

Jason Castro Hallelujah!
Jason Castro's performance of "Hallelujah" on American Idol has led to a surge of popularity for the Jeff Buckley cover of the Leonard Cohen song in the iTunes Store, propelling it to the number-one spot on the iTunes singles chart. Buckley's version of the song sold 178,000 digital downloads in the week following Castro's performance, to debut at number one on Billboard's Hot Digital Songs chart. According to Billboard, this was the highest boost in digital sales a song had ever received after being performed by a contestant on American Idol. It was the first time Buckley's version of the song charted on a Billboard chart, as well as the first U.S. number-one song on any chart for Buckley, who died May 29, 1997, at age 30.
Castro's version of the song "Hallelujah" briefly appeared in the number-one spot on the iTunes chart before it was removed due to the producers of American Idol not wanting any contestant to be favored.
