'Rich in Faith' Brings Young Pastors to Reality TV Spotlight

As a MTV executive, Rod Aissa helped develop "Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica." Now at Oxygen Media, believes he's found equally engaging young marrieds who will appeal to today's millennials. However, the couple featured in "Rich in Faith" are pastors, not pop stars.

The reality show features Rich Wilkerson Jr. and his wife DawnChere as they launch a youth-oriented Miami church, Vous, and grapple with balancing work and home life.

"What I liked about it for Oxygen is the overlay of the discussion of faith," Aissa said. "We know from brand research ... that traditional things like family and relationship to God and spirituality are still high on their (the audience's) list."

Rich Wilkerson brings a celebrity connection to the series: He married Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, but the Wilkersons say it's their relationship with God and parishioners that's important, not TV celebrity or its trappings.

"So often it's really easy, especially for people of faith, to sit around and report negatively about the status quo of where our nation is or where entertainment is," said Rich Wilkerson.

"Our idea was to do something that's encouraging, that's positive out there. We want to show people you can have faith, even in this busy, chaotic world we live in right now," he said.

Faith and reality TV have become close companions. A number of shows are based on families for whom religion is a visible part of their lives, including UP's "Bringing Up Bates," in its third season. Others focus on the clergy, among them Oxygen's "Preachers" franchise that started in Los Angeles.

"Preachers of LA" was criticized by some who said the show could foster the inaccurate idea that preachers are in it for fame and wealth.

Hollywood's fascination with pairing reality and faith has dubious roots, said Dave Johnson, a film and TV writer-producer.

"It's like the old circus, with the sideshow tent," Johnson said. "They'll use little people, they'll use Christians, they'll use tattoo people. It's a group of people (industry executives) don't really know or understand or are part of, and think they're interesting to watch."

That's fine, he added, if the show is created and produced honestly, citing "Bringing Up Bates" as an example. He had yet to see "Rich in Faith."

"If they chose someone who is genuine and true, who believes and lives that faith, then the show will reflect that faith honestly," Johnson said.

Bringing Up Bates Family Offers Unique Opportunity in TV

Gil and Kelly Jo Bates became reality television stars after they showcased their 19 children on UP's show "Bringing Up Bates." Now they want to give one fan the chance to join their family by competing in the "Be the 20th Bates for a day" challenge.

While "Bringing Up Bates" has only been on television since January, over 10,000 fans of the show have already signed up to join the competition in which one grand prize winner and a guest will receive a free trip to TN to appear on the set and film with the family.

"Viewers find the family very relatable and this gives them an easy mechanism to share their love and appreciation for the family. It's also an opportunity that's rarely provided in the entertainment space," said Richard Turner, vice president of digital media at UP, to The Christian Post.

New Family Friendly Drama to Star Kelli Williams and Jonathan Scarfe

UP's upcoming series "Ties That Bind" promises to be family-friendly and stars Kelli Williams (The Practice, Army Wives), Jonathan Scarfe (Hell on Wheels, Perception), Mitchell Kummen (When Calls the Heart), Matreya Scarrwener (Once Upon a Time, Falling Skies), Rhys Matthew Bond, Natasha Calis, Dion Johnstone and Luke Perry (90210).

"Ties that Bind" revolves around Allison McLean (Kelli Williams), a tough and experienced police detective in suburban Seattle.  Like most working women, her hands are already full, balancing a demanding and dangerous job and a family -- husband Matt (Jonathan Scarfe), and teenagers Jeff (Mitchell Kummen) and Rachel (Natasha Calis).  But when she and her partner, Devin (Dion Johnstone), must arrest her brother, Tim (Luke Perry), for aggravated assault, her world drastically changes as Tim is convicted and sent to prison leaving his two teenagers Cameron (Rhys Matthew Bond) and Mariah (Matreya Scarrwener) teetering on the brink of foster care.  Having done the right thing as an officer of the law, Allison now feels compelled to do the right thing as a sister and aunt; she brings Tim's two very unhappy teens into her home.  Squeezing four teenagers under one roof proves to be an additional test of Allison's strength and patience.  It won’t be easy for her husband, her children or Tim’s kids either.  In addition to investigating local crimes, the series will also focus on the joys and struggles of the teens as they adjust to their new home, their new high school, make new friends and experience love, romance, anger and jealousy.

'Unbroken', 'Heaven Is for Real,' 'God's Not Dead' and UP Win Big at Faith-Friendly Awards

Heaven Is for Real and Unbroken took top prizes at the Faith & Values Awards which rewards programming based not only on their entertainment and artistic quality but also their uplifting messaging and Bible-honoring content.

Unbroken, a film about World War II prisoner Louis Zamperini that was directed by Angelina Jolie, was deemed the best film of 2014 for mature audiences while Heaven Is for Real was named the best movie for families.

The 23rd annual Movieguide Faith & Values Awards Gala was hosted by Bill Engvall and drew executives from most major — and lots of minor — studios. The event will be broadcast on ReelzChannel on Feb. 21 and again two days later.

The most notable snubs of the evening were the total absence of Noah and Exodus: Gods and Kings, two movies based on the Bible that were controversial in some circles for being insufficiently faithful to the source material.

Unlike the Oscars and most similar affairs, the Faith & Values Awards chooses not only a winner in its top two categories but also nine runners-up that receive trophies.

In the 'family' category, the nine additional movies were: Son of God, God's Not Dead, Big Hero 6, Mr. Peabody & Sherman, Dolphin Tale 2, Penguins of Madagascar, Bears, Muppets Most Wanted and Planes: Fire and Rescue.

In the 'mature' category, the nine other movies were: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Giver, The Good Lie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies; The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Divergent and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Also unlike other awards shows, the Faith & Values Awards doles out a few cash prizes, supported by a grant from the Templeton Foundation. This year, its $100,000 Epiphany Prize for movies went to God's Not Dead and its $100,000 Epiphany Prize for television went to UP's Love Finds You in Sugarcreek.

There's also a Faith & Freedom Award for movies and television, with the former going to The Giver and the latter to The Gabby Douglas Story.

Presenters included actor Corbin Bernsen, Duck Dynasty personalities Sadie and Korie Robertson and, as has been the case for a few years, several Disney Channel stars: Madison Pettis (Jake and the Never Land Pirates), Shane Harper (Good Luck Charlie); Olivia Holt (Kickin' It), Austin North (I Didn't Do it) and Karan Brar (Jessie).

Stevie Wonder appeared with several other artists in a musical tribute to gospel singer Andrae Crouch, who died in January.

UP TV Is Honored by TV Watchdog for Continuing its Family-friendly Ways

UP has been honored again by a TV watchdog group with a seal of approval as it launches a new reality series called "Bringing up Bates."

"If we give a program the [PTC] Seal of Approval it means that you can rely on the fact that there's not going to be a lot of sex, violence, or profanity on the program," says Melissa Henson of the Parents Television Council. "[It means] that it is something that you can watch with your kids in the room and you don't have to worry about being embarrassed or caught off-guard by inappropriate content."

The reality show, which debuted on UP on New Year's Day, focuses on Gil and Kelly Jo Bates, and their 19 children (ages 2 to 25).

PTC recently released a report examining every major broadcast network and every primetime show in the fall 2013 season that featured family as central to its storyline. According to that study, 99 percent of programs that claim to be about families aren't actually safe for family viewing.

"You expect that if it's about a family it's going to be something you can watch with your family," says Henson. "That's generally not the case – but fortunately it is the case with 'Bringing up Bates.'"

In an interview with The Christian Post, PTC president Tim Winter pointed out it's not the first time UP has been awarded their seal of approval.

"We have renewed our seal of approval of the UP Network every year since 2010," he said. "We continue to work with the UP Network and with other family-friendly networks to make sure our members, and the general public, are aware of their programming."

PTC believes the best way for viewers to express their concerns or complaints about TV content is to contact advertisers.

Passing of “Bud” Paxson, Founder of HSN and Pax

Broadcast and cable pioneer Lowell “Bud” Paxson passed away last week. Among many other accomplishments, the devoutly Christian Paxson was the founder of the PAX television network, a broadcast channel devoted entirely to showing clean, family-friendly original programming.

When one of his radio advertising clients paid his bill with 118 electric can openers, Paxson announced on the air that he would sell the openers for $10 each, if the customers would come down to the radio station. All the openers sold in three hours. This event inspired Paxson to create the Home Shopping Network, which soon was doing $1 billion in sales. Paxson sold HSN in 1991, using the profits to buy television stations all over the country.

A deeply committed and outspoken evangelical Christian, Paxson was dismayed by the increasingly graphic and immoral content on broadcast and cable TV. Using his fortune and ownership of TV stations as a base, Paxson formed the broadcast network PAX TV in 1998 – a network dedicated to creating and airing original, clean, family-friendly programming like It’s a Miracle, Hope Island, Doc (starring Billy Ray Cyrus), and Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye.

UP's Bringing Up Bates Becomes Instant Hit

UP announced today that the premiere episode of its original series “Bringing Up Bates” on January 1 was the strongest original telecast ever for the network among W18-49 and W25-541.  Based on live + same day data, the series ranked #16 in the time-period among ad-supported cable networks in W25-54 and #20 in W18-492.

“I can’t think of a better way for UP to start 2015 than having viewers embrace ‘Bringing Up Bates’ and this remarkable family,” said Charley Humbard, president & CEO, UP.

Led by devoted father Gil and his loving wife Kelly Jo, the Bates do everything in bulk while staying true to their values and rules for the family.  With a grand total of 19 children ranging in age from 2 to 25, they are the definition of a “big, happy family.”  But lately – as viewers will see – their simple rural lifestyle in Tennessee is in a flurry of transitions and is continually challenged by the modern world.

The 13-episode UP Original Series will explore new, ever-changing family dynamics as the Bates celebrate the birth of the 1st grandchild, Bradley Gilvin Bates, with son Zach (25) and his wife Whitney; foster the courtship of Michaella (24) and Brandon Keilen by allowing him to share an extended visit with the family during the holiday season; support Erin (23) and her husband Chad Paine as they face a health issue that challenges their hope of starting a family; check in on newlywed Alyssa (20) as she finds her way in Florida with new husband, John Webster, the son of recently re-elected U.S. Representative Daniel Webster (R-Fla.) and prepare for the birth of her first child; encourage Tori (18) to bring order to the family schedule and step up to meet the challenges of child training as her parents have become more lax in their later years.

Social Media Fueled Success of God's Not Dead

TheWrap.com showcases social media's role in fueling the success of God's Not Dead.

The indie that upended the Hollywood establishment to become last weekend's fourth highest grossing film on fewer than 800 theaters deployed one of the most sophisticated social media campaigns this year. It was a grassroots effort that helped the studio target and turn out sold-out crowds.

Credit for its success belongs to Ash Greyson, CEO of social media consultant Ribbow Media, which turned a similar trick with last year's conservative documentary “2016: Obama's America.”

“Social media was critical with this,” Russell Wolfe, CEO of Pure Flix Entertainment, the company behind the $5 million film. “Ash is creative, he's innovative, he came up with fantastic ideas and he was able to give a lot of value for the money.”

Greyson got results by drilling down into data, excavating not only Christians, but likely Christian moviegoers and then peppering them with promotional materials for the film. Greyson's team went deeper, teaming with companies such as Pandora to identify people who listened to Christian music and particularly to the Newsboys, a Christian pop group featured in the film.

“The problem historically has been that people think because someone is a Christian, they're more likely to go to a Christian movie,” Greyson said. “They may be more likely to go to a Christian movie than a horror movie, but they still may never go to the movies.”

When it came to choosing his online advertisements, Greyson told various platforms that he wanted their most disruptive products. Instead of banner ads, he asked for spots that started playing instantly or that stopped and restarted if a person took a break from using a service at mid-point.

It also meant shunning television nearly entirely save for a few spots on the popular Christian broadcast “The 700 Club” and on UP. Greyson believes that television spots are too broad, offering limited bang for the buck.

“We're not buying a demographic, we're buying a committed audience,” he said. “It's all about peeling the onion.”
