Newsboys Celebrate 10 Million in Career Sales

Platinum-selling Newsboys were honored at their Nashville tour stop earlier this week for total career sales in excess of 10 million units. During a VIP reception at Lipscomb University's Allen Arena, FairTrade Services president/founder Jeff Moseley recognized the band's prolific achievement and rare accomplishment within the genre. Since forming in Australia more than three decades ago and arriving in America in 1987, Newsboys have released 23 recordings and are heralded as one of Christian music's most iconic bands.

Moseley also announced a full-length Newsboys United recording, set for release next year. The FairTrade Services project will showcase Newsboys' current lineup--Michael Tait, Duncan Phillips, Jeff Frankenstein and Jody Davis--along with former members Peter Furler and Phil Joel. The supergroup has performed to numerous capacity crowds around the country since reuniting earlier this year. Showcasing "all the hits... under one roof... for one tour," the "Newsboys United Tour" is set to play a total of 100 shows in 2018.

Additionally, Newsboys United performed fan favorite "He Reigns" during the 49th Annual GMA Dove Awards, broadcast earlier this week on TBN. The band was also recently announced as headliners of the multi-artist Winter Jam 2019 Tour Spectacular--Christian music's largest annual tour and one of the biggest first quarter outings in the world. Newsboys United are set to take the Winter Jam stage beginning January 11 in Jacksonville, Florida, delivering a string of the biggest hits from their three-decade career.

One of the most influential bands in Christian music history, Newsboys have amassed eight Gold® certifications, 33 #1 radio hits, four Grammy nominations, two American Music Award nominations and multiple Dove Awards. Their signature songs include "We Believe," "He Reigns," "Miracles," "Born Again" and their Platinum-certified mega hit, "God's Not Dead." The latter inspired one of the most popular Christian film franchises of all time.

Newsboys Lead Singer Michael Tait Endorses Ted Cruz

Michael Tait, the frontman for the enormously popular Newsboys, has officially endorsed Texas Sen. Ted Cruz for president, citing the GOP hopeful’s principles, saying that, as an African-American, he supports him “100 percent.”

Tait, who is an alumnus of Liberty University, told Fox News columnist Todd Starnes that when he saw the senator launch his campaign from the university in March of last year, that he saw Cruz’s “drive” and “hunger” for “solid principles.”

“I saw him, his family, the way he talked to people in person. I saw his drive, his hunger for solid principles, solid ideas going forward in our country that, even as an African-American, if you want to get really technical about it, I support 100 percent,” Tait told Starnes.

Tait went on to share some advice for fellow Christians who will be entering the voting booth.

“People of faith should vote for a man they believe in,” Tait said. “A man they feel can do the job, not falter, not say one thing before the election and do another whole thing after the election, a man that stands his ground, keeps his word, protects our freedom — that’s who you should vote for.”

'God's Not Dead 2: He's Surely Alive' to Star Melissa Joan Hart and Jesse Metcalf

"God's Not Dead 2: He's Surely Alive," the sequel to the $60 million grossing 2014 film, hits theaters on Easter of 2016 stars Melissa Joan Hart ("Clarissa Explains It All," "Sabrina the Teenage Witch") and Jesse Metcalf ("Desperate Housewives") and will feature a slew of cameos from well-known celebrities, including an appearance from "Duck Dynasty" star Sadie Robertson.
Robertson will follow in the footsteps of her parents, Willie and Korie, who made a cameo in the original "God's Not Dead" film.

Other cameos include Hayley Orrantia ("The Goldbergs"), Ernie Hudson ("Ghostbusters"), model Robin Givens and singer Pat Boone.

"God's Not Dead 2"Stars from the original "God's Not Dead" film Trisha LaFache, Benjamin Onyango, Paul Kwo and David A.R. White will be returning for the second installment. The Newsboys will also have a cameo.

"God's Not Dead 2: He's Surely Alive" takes place in the fictional town of Hope Springs, Arkansas, at a high school where teacher Grace Wesley, played by Hart, faces opposition when she tries to speak about Jesus openly in her classroom.

"With the principal and superintendent teaming up with a zealous civil liberties group represented by an attorney with no love lost for God, Grace faces an epic court case with the help of sympathetic and charismatic defense lawyer, that could cost her the career she had always dreamed of — and expel God from the classroom once and for all," reads a description of the film.

While the first "God's Not Dead" film dealt with an antagonistic atheist professor, the new film will address the freedom of religion, a topic that has become even more prevalent since last month's U.S. Supreme Court ruling that made state-level bans on same-sex marriage unconstitutional.

"God's Not Dead" is arguably one of the most successful faith-based movies of all time. The film cost just $2 million to make, and grossed over $60 million at the the box office.

Kevin Sorbo, who played an atheist professor in "God's Not Dead," the film's main antagonist, boasted about the film's success after it was released on DVD in September.

"'God's Not Dead,' dollar for dollar, has been the most successful movie this year by far and the most successful faith-based movie," said Sorbo.

The film also debuted at No.1 on the Nielsen Christian Videos Sales Chart, and No. 2 Nielsen VideoScan First Alert and Blu-ray Disc sales charts in August of 2014.

Written by Daniel Bashta, “God’s Not Dead”  helped inspire the blockbuster Pure Flix film of the same name. Both the God’s Not Dead album and single earned RIAA Gold certifications last year.

Newsboys have sold more than 8 million units, amassing eight Gold certifications, 33 #1 radio hits, four Grammy nominations.

Audio Adrenaline 4.0

Founding member of Audio Adrenaline Will McGinniss, as well as his supporting cast of Jared Byers, Dwayne Larring and even the newly minted lead singer Josh Engler (Abandon), all have left the band, reflecting the first time Audio Adrenaline has existed without an original member.

Audio Adrenaline is now fronted by lead vocalist Adam Agee, who was referred in the band's official press release as the "former Stellar Kart frontman"- reflecting a shake-up in that band as well.

Joining Agee will be former Wavorly frontman Dave Stovall, guitarist Brandon Bagby and drummer Jack Campbell.

As for McGinniss, his transition out of the band he started in the early 1990s comes with an increased role in the organization that inspired the band's 2012 comeback. He currently serves as Board President of the band-founded nonprofit orphan care organization Hands and Feet Project.

"To get to bring back Audio A, for one sole purpose- to champion the cause of the orphan and abandoned children through our work at the Hands & Feet Project in Haiti- was incredible. But now God is calling me to a new season in Him off the road. I have every confidence that with this new group of guys and an incredible bunch of new songs, Audio A will be all about that same goal. I pray God's heart and blessing over them." McGinnis shared.

"I'm so excited to be a part of the ongoing legacy that is Audio Adrenaline," said new lead singer Agee. "The band was a huge influence on me and my decision to pursue music. My hope is to continue to inspire Audio A fans with new songs we are passionate about. We can't wait to share them live as we hit the road with the Newsboys this spring."

Following the band's hiatus in 2007 in the wake of founding lead singer Mark Stuart's vocal health issues, a new lineup of veteran artists rekindled Audio Adrenaline in 2012. Continuing on to answer the band's original call to bring the story of orphans in Haiti--and around the world--to the forefront, Audio Adrenaline partnered with Fair Trade Services and the Know Hope Foundation to release Kings & Queens, which saw multiple radio singles impact listeners, including the smash title-cut.

So what does Stuart think of version 3.0?

"Watching the guys practice for this upcoming tour and record has been such a joy," he said. "Hearing the old classics with the new Audio A message makes me proud to be part of a legacy that continues to focus on the Glory of Christ and the absolute joy of becoming His hands and feet."

Controversy Brews Around A Co-Founder of the Newsboys

A co-founder of one of the most popular bands in Christian music has revealed that he is now an atheist.

George Perdikis, one of the founding members of the Newsboys penned a piece on the Friendly Atheist blog last week titled, “I Co-Founded One of the Most Popular Christian Rock Bands Ever… and I’m Now An Atheist.”

But admitting to nontheistic beliefs isn't the only thing that Perdikis, who helped launch the band in Queensland, Australia, back in 1985, wrote that has captured some attention in recent days. He also took aim at the Newsboys’ recent involvement in “God’s Not Dead,” a movie named after one of the band’s popular songs, seemingly accusing the group of not being as pure as its image portrays.

“Recently, the Newsboys were featured in the movie God’s Not Dead. The movie demonstrated the pervasive attitude of Christians,” he wrote. “They demonized everyone while giving a pass to their own particular brand of Christianity, making themselves look like fluffy white angels with perfect, synchronized lives.”

Perdikis detailed his journey after exiting the band in 1990 as well, which included marrying, having two kids — and leaving faith behind.

“As I carved out a life for myself away from the church, I began my own voyage of inquiry into what I believed. My perceptions started to transform when I became interested in cosmology in 1992,” he wrote. “I soon found myself fascinated by the works of Carl Sagan, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Lawrence Krauss, Brian Cox, and Richard Dawkins. I learned so much and was blown away by all the amazing scientific discoveries and facts.”

After his marriage ended in 2003, Perdikis said that he began examining “human psychology” and subsequently renounced Christianity in 2007, officially declaring that he no longer believed in God.

Perdikis also shared his upbringing, which included a brief stint at a Christian high school, where he met Peter Furler, who would later join him in forming the band.

“The choice to become a ‘Christian Rock Band’ was heavily influenced by Peter’s parents, Bill and Rosalie Furler,” he wrote. “As fundamentalist Christians, the only acceptable form of music was the kind that worshipped God. Bill and Rosalie were like second parents to me and, for that reason, I never questioned their advice.”

That said, he admitted to never really being comfortable with “the strict rules imposed by Christianity,” writing that he merely wanted to play rock music and was turned off by the religious standards that he felt were imposed upon him. In the end, he left the band after co-writing the first two albums, he said.

Some, like Christian commentator Dr. Michael Brown, have reacted to the revelation by calling for Christians to “pray for … restoration” for Perdikis, with the band’s co-manager, David Wagner, declining to comment on the blog post, telling the Huffington Post that Perdikis is ”a former member who we haven’t had any interaction or heard from in more than 20 years.”

Despite remaining wildly popular, none of the original members of Newsboys are still part of the group, with the last remaining original member exiting in 2009.

As for Perdikis, he’s been gone so long his name isn't even mentioned in a Billboard.com band biography, as the Huffington Post reported.

Can Maker of God's Not Dead Recreate Success?

Do You Believe? arrives in theatres March 20 from Pure Flix, the studio behind last year’s big-screen hit, God’s Not Dead. The drama features an ensemble cast of Oscar winner Mira Sorvino, Golden Globe award winning actress Cybill Shepherd, Lord of the Ring's Sean Astin, 70s' icon Lee Majors, Alexa PenaVega (Spy Kids), sitcom staple Ted McGinley, Brian Bosworth and Delroy Lindo.

“Do You Believe?” tells the story of diverse lives that intersect on the streets of Chicago – rich lives, poor lives, and desperate lives. A dozen different souls—all moving in different directions, all longing for something more. As their lives unexpectedly intersect, they each discover the power in the Cross of Christ … even if they don’t believe in it. When a local pastor (McGinley) is shaken to the core by the visible faith of an old street-corner preacher (Lindo), he is reminded that authentic belief always requires action. His response ignites a faith-fueled journey that powerfully impacts everyone and touches their lives in ways that only God could orchestrate. More than a movie, it is the question we all must answer (confront) in our lives: “Do You Believe?”

Accompanying the feature film will be the soundtrack of the same name that features the hit single, “We Believe”, by the award winning contemporary Christian group, The Newsboys.

Michael Scott, producer, God's Not Dead and partner, Pure Flix credits some of the success to Winter Jam.  "There's no question the momentum we generated from our sponsorship at Winter Jam created a massive awareness for our movie.”

This year Winter Jam is also spotlighting NBC’s upcoming "A.D. The Bible Continues" from the producing team of Roma Downey and Mark Burnett. Downey and Burnett will make appearances at multiple tour dates, including the Winter Jam Dome Spectacular in Atlanta (Burnett only).

Continuing where History Channel’s hit mini-series "The Bible" left off,  “A.D. The Bible Continues" starts with the Crucifixion and the Resurrection, telling its story through the eyes of the Apostles, Pilate, Caiaphas, the Jewish Zealots and the Herod family. With the Book of Acts and Paul’s letters as its foundation, the series chronicles what would become the most powerful global movement in history—the epic rise of the early Church. The 12-week Television event premieres Easter Sunday, April 5th on NBC.

The Winter Jam 2015 Tour Spectacular kicked-off January 2 in Charleston, West Virginia, and continues through March. Featuring headliners Skillet, along with Jeremy Camp, Francesca Battistelli, Building 429, NewSong, for King & Country and Family Force 5 .

Newsboys' God's Not Dead Digital Single Certified Gold

Newsboys' "God's Not Dead (Like A Lion)" single, from its 2011 project God's Not Dead, has been certified Gold by the RIAA. Selling more than 140,000 tracks since January, the song has experienced a phenomenal resurgence fueled by the popularity of the God's Not Dead movie, in which Newsboys performs the song.

"God's Not Dead (Like A Lion)" was a No. 1 radio hit on the Billboard AC Monitored chart two years ago and has consistently been the top-selling track from Newsboys' God's Not Dead album. Yet it was the box office release of God's Not Dead, which has earned more than $59 million to date, that pushed the single over the 500,000 certified sales mark.

Consequently, "God's Not Dead (Like A Lion)" can now be counted among an elite list of Christian tracks ever to secure such status. The song is included among those by prolific artists like Bob Carlisle, Steven Curtis Chapman, Casting Crowns, MercyMe, Skillet, and Switchfoot.

Founded and hosted by NewSong and headlined by multi Grammy-nominated Newsboys and Grammy-winning hip-hop artist Lecrae, this year’s all-star line-up also featured Tenth Avenue North, Thousand Foot Krutch, Plumb and Colton Dixon.

"It's been 19 years of continued growth for Winter Jam," says Roy Morgan, Winter Jam promoter. "It's amazing to look back and see how God has orchestrated the smallest of details to grow and use this tour to deliver His message of love and Hope to literally millions of people."

Featuring Guinness World Record-holding high wire artist Nik Wallenda’s tightrope walk across the Dome, the event also included appearances from Reed Robertson of "Duck Dynasty," Grammy-nominated David Crowder and University of Georgia head football coach Mark Richt.

Despite record-breaking inclement weather around the country, causing the cancellation of one of the tour’s 48 slated shows, Winter Jam played to capacity crowds at Chicago’s Sears Centre Arena; Houston’s Toyota Center; Scottrade Center in St. Louis; Cincinnati’s U.S. Bank Arena; and Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, among numerous other sold-out events.

God's Not Dead Is America's Fifth Most Popular Movie This Week

At just 780 locations, God's Not Dead earned an incredible $8.56 million. That ranks seventh all-time among faith-based movies, and ranks first among those opening in fewer than 1,000 theaters. It's a bit below Courageous ($9.1 million), but above Fireproof ($6.8 million).

The PG-rated film about a college student who is challenged by his professor to prove God's existence was driven by solid advance ticket sales and by church-based outreach. Kevin Sorbo and Dean Cain starred and Duck Dynasty's popular Willie and Korie Robertson made a cameo which was used in the marketing push.

God's Not Dead had a grassroots marketing effort targeted specifically at Christians, who often feel neglected by Hollywood. In addition to the Duck Dynasty stars, popular Christian band Newsboys (who have an album titled "God's Not Dead") were also featured in the film. At least as important was its intriguing story, which centered around a devout Christian college student's philosophical battle with his atheist professor (Kevin Sorbo).

Distributor Freestyle Releasing is looking to expand the movie next weekend. With good word-of-mouth, this could ultimately earn over $30 million total.
